“Pregnant?” I repeated, “How?”

“Well, it makes sense actually. Bella is still human, and so her body is able to change in order to carry a baby.”

“Oh.” I murmured, and flipped a golden curl over my shoulder

How unfair. She gives up beautiful humanity for immortality, and still gets a baby. And she was going to kill it. She was going to have Carlisle kill an innocent baby. A baby.

“Edward’s beating himself up about this. It’s not good. I never thought this could happen.” Carlisle muttered, shaking his head

“He wants to kill it.” I hissed

“Rosalie this thing…

“This baby.” I corrected him

“Fine. This baby is dangerous. It’s half-vampire and half-human. It stronger than Bella. It could kill her.”

“Would the baby survive?” I asked

“Rosalie.” Esme breathed in disbelief

“Kidding.” I lied

Jasper shot me a concerned look.

I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket.

“Hello?”

“Rosalie?”

“Yes?”

“It’s Bella.”

“What is it?”

“I need you to help me.”

“What’s wrong?” I asked, she sounded like she was crying

“Edward wants to kill him. He wants to kill my baby. Please, Rosalie.”

“Of course. I’ll see you soon.”

“Thank you Rosalie.”

I closed the phone and slid it into my back pocket.

“Who was that, Rose?” Emmett asked

“Bella.”

“She didn’t call Alice?” he asked

“No. She called me because she knew I would understand.”

“oh.”

“I’ll be upstairs. Let me know when we’re leaving for the airport.”

I shot a glare at Carlisle as I passed him. I ran up the stairs and went into the room and flopped down on the bed. I had to put my jealousy aside and help Bella. This baby had a right to live. But what if she died?

What if Bella died when she had the baby? Or even before she gave birth? What if Carlisle was right? It could be stronger than her. Was that why she trusted me? Because she knew that if she got hurt I would take care of her baby? Was that why?

Stop it, Rose. Do you hear yourself? You want her to die. I couldn’t fight with myself. Part of me wished that she would die, so that I could keep the baby. I knew that it was horrible, but I had always been selfish. And part of me didn’t want her to die, because I knew that it was horrible to want a person to die. But she was having a baby and she didn’t even want it.

But she did want it. She called me to save the baby from Carlisle and Edward. I was going to help her. I wasn’t going to wish death upon her. If it happened then it happened. And I would take care of her baby. Her baby, not mine. I breathed out a breath of relief. I was proud of myself for doing the right thing. I, Rosalie Hale, was going to help someone other than myself.

“Rose?” Emmett called

“Coming.” I called

We drove to the airport in silence. Esme kept glancing frantically at Carlisle. And Alice and Jasper were squeezing each other’s hands like they were nervous.

“Come on, guys.” Carlisle said quietly

“It should be this gate.” Esme said, grabbing Carlisle’s hand

Sure enough, people started heading through the gate into the airport. I scanned the crowd for Edward and…

She was really showing. They’d only been gone for about a month. And then something happened that really shocked me. Bella ran. Bella ran right into my arms. I embraced her and smoothed her hair.

“It’s gonna be okay. Carlisle will never touch him.” I promised her

“Thank you, Rosalie.” She whispered, still not letting go

A Valentine for Rosalie

A Valentine for Rosalie

Renesmee Cullen rested on her stomach, kicked her heels in the air and cupped her hands around her cheeks. She watched Jacob with intensity, her red eyes following his movements as he tied up the legs of his kill. She let out a bored sigh.

“Jake, I don’t think Aunt Rosalie is going to like this very much,” Renesmee said. Jacob shrugged his shoulders and lugged the large dead boar over his back. He laughed at her.

“Ah, don’t worry about it, Nessie. She’s going to love it,” Jacob said with a wide grin. Renesmee cocked her head and blew out a breath. She was no dummy; she knew Jacob was up to something.

--

Rosalie Hale stopped at the front door of her home, and she looked back at Emmett with a sniff. He grinned at her, and she rolled her eyes.

It had been nice to get away from a crowded house. There were too many people, either visiting or taking up residence at the Cullen home, and sometimes Rosalie just felt suffocated. For the afternoon, she and Emmett decided to get away, stock up on hunting, and take a detour to Canada for some shopping.

However, eventually they had to make their way back home, but Rosalie had hoped some of their more “unwanted” guests had left. No such luck, since she got a whiff of unpleasantness before coming through the door. She sighed. Despite Carlisle’s smooth reminders, she didn’t know if she’d ever get used to him.

She strode through the door with her chin in the air, and she sent the wolf an unpleasant glance before acknowledging his presence. “I see that smell is still here. Oh, it’s you, fur ball.” She glared at his feet propped up on Esme’s 19th century French table. She bristled at the thought of his disgusting animal germs already smeared across the surface.

“Oh, Emmett and Blondie are home. I almost missed you, doll,” Jacob cracked. Rosalie felt her temper rising. She could feel Emmett beaming behind her; she couldn’t understand how he took such joy out of her tirades with Jacob.

Before Rosalie could chide him that this wasn’t his home, Renesmee launched off the couch and embraced her happily. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Aunt Rosalie. I made you this,” Renesmee said, holding up a chiffon scarf.

“You made this?” Rosalie asked, caressing the periwinkle fabric.

“Yes, I read the book last week after Uncle Emmett said you like chiffon.” The young woman grinned at her.

The scarf was flawless, and for someone who just read a book, it was eerily perfect. Even Renesmee still surprised her. “Impressive. Thank you; I adore it.” Rosalie leaned in for another light hug.

Renesmee was satisfied with the response, and she buzzed over to the couch to plop onto Jacob’s lap. Rosalie shot him a glare.

“What are you still doing here? Don’t you have a pack of other beasts to order around?” she asked hotly.

“Relax, Ice Babe. I’m here to see Renesmee, or have you forgotten she’s my mate now? You’ll be seeing me more than ever,” he said with a toothy grin. Rosalie groaned audibly.

“Well, there’s no accounting for taste,” Rosalie said, sighing heavily. Emmett sniggered behind her, and as Rosalie moved ahead, he followed behind.

--

When Rosalie and Emmett disappeared upstairs, Jacob rubbed his hands together in anticipation. Renesmee stared at the top of the steps, waiting.

“Jake, I have a bad feeling about this. Grandma Esme isn’t going to appreciate the commotion,” Renesmee warned again.

Jacob waved it off. “Meh, whatever. If anything it’ll teach her to finally accept me into this family.”

Renesmee looked exasperated. “It seems more counterproductive to me.”

Jacob rolled his eyes. “There you go again, Nessie, using words that make my head hurt.”

Suddenly, a throaty, demonic scream echoed throughout the household, and Jacob’s eyes lit up in glee. “Ha!” he said, and he stood up as Rosalie bolted down the stairs in a flash and got in his face.

“You! How dare you? This is inconceivable! You’re a brute. You shouldn’t be allowed one foot in this house with your stench and bad manners! I should break your neck right now for your insolence!” she stormed at him.

“What, you don’t like my Valentine’s gift? I’m hurt, Blondie. I spent all afternoon finding that treat for you. It’s not like I can return it either,” Jacob said, faking his hurt feelings, which only seemed to enrage Rosalie even more.

“What ever gave you any idea I would accept food from you, let alone I’d want you to put it in my closet!” Rosalie pointed a finger at him.

Jacob was having a hard time holding back the laughter with his act. She looked so pissed.

“Well, since you don’t have a bed, I didn’t know where else to put it,” Jacob said with a shrug.

“Oh, I’ll tell you where to put it, mongrel,” Rosalie said, making a fist. Emmett seemed all too amused, and he laughed lightly behind her. She shot her mate a dirty look before settling her crazed eyes back on Jacob.

“What is this clamor?” a smooth feminine voice inquired. Everyone turned around and met Esme’s curious face. “Rosalie, what’s the meaning of this fight?”

“Jacob, here, gave me the most disgusting gift. There’s boar’s blood all over my clothes. I’m just telling him exactly how I feel about his bad manners,” she said. She held up her long fingernails and cracked her knuckles. “And now, I’m going to settle this.”

“Wait! Rosalie,” said Carlisle behind Esme. Both of the parents were eerily calm, which was very like them. They smiled as if they hadn’t a concern for the fight at all. “Please be so kind to take your argument outside. We just had these walls repainted.”

“Oh, I do love this green color too. It reminds me of Ireland,” Esme said. She lifted her hand up, and Carlisle kissed it as they got trapped in an old memory.

Jacob snorted. “Fine by me, Blondie. It’s not my fault you can’t just take a good gift like that and be happy.” He lumbered outside as she followed him, pushing him from behind.

Jacob stumbled down the steps and regained his balance. He turned around with surprise. He didn’t think she’d actually push him like he was some kind of child! He cracked a grin at her. This was getting interesting.

They paced around a circle, stalking each other like prey. Rosalie seemed more serious, and Jacob didn’t doubt that she’d lunge for him in a second. He could see the anger in her eyes.

Behind him, he could feel Emmett and Renesmee watching them with interest, like they were some kind of sports TV show. Honestly, Jacob sort of liked the attention. Besides, seeing Rosalie get spitting mad at him was kind of hot – in a non-mate way, of course.

“Well, are you going to throw a punch or what?” Jacob called after her, sounding bored. She gnashed her teeth at him. He scolded her teasingly. “How unladylike.”

“Ha! You have no business lecturing me on refinery, dog. Now, apologize before I gut you,” she hissed at him.

“You would do that to your niece’s mate? How far will your madness go, Ice Queen?” Jacob joked. Emmett let out a guffaw. He was glad Blondie’s mate was a good sport. He didn’t know if he had the humor to take on two vampires. Maybe another day…

Rosalie stood still, and she flipped her hair. Well, there was something she was good at. “I didn’t say I was going to kill you,” she answered snottily. “Just reasonably maim you.”

Then, she finally put action to her words. She charged for him, and they tussled in a heap of angry, gyrating bodies on the ground. He caught her foot in his eye, and he growled when a fist grazed his off-limits zone. She grabbed onto his arm, and he tried to wrench free, but Blondie had a grip on her. As her stone bosom knocked against his arm, he tried not to have smutty thoughts. Tried, being the key word here.

She groaned as he pulled her back in a headlock, and with all the strength he could muster, he held her there. She struggled for naught, and he delighted in his power over her. Nope, she wasn’t going anywhere.

As fun as it sounded to keep Rosalie in a headlock for a few hours, Jake let up his grip and decided to make the stakes interesting. He tossed her forward, and she landed on her elbows in front of him. He put his foot on her bottom and flexed his biceps.

“Victory!” he managed to crow out before Rosalie shoved him off, and he landed on his backside. She stood up, dusted the dirt off, and put the heel of her pointy shoe on his face.

“That’s enough, you scoundrel,” she said, obviously annoyed. She didn’t seem to be intent on gutting him anymore, which Jacob thought was a plus. “Say your sorry, clean out that mess in my closet, and give me money for new clothes, and then, I’ll think about accepting your apology.”

“How about I just say I’m sorry?” Jacob said with a grin. He really didn’t want to clean up blood, and he was broke.

She snarled at him.

“Stop it, you two!” yelled a voice at them. Rosalie and Jacob turned around to see Renesmee with a scowl. “Is this really the way to spend Valentine’s Day?”

Emmett smirked. “Yep. I think so.”

Renesmee’s look showed his comment wasn’t welcome. “Now both of you, say your sorry. Jake, I told you this was a bad idea.”

Jacob put on his best face for his Nessie. “Um, but it’s the thought that counts, right?”

Rosalie groaned and rolled her eyes. “Ugh! I’ve had enough! I’m going to need like a five year vacation from this family!” She stomped back inside while Emmett followed her in mirth.

Renesmee walked over to Jake, who was still lounging on the ground. She held out her hand. “Come on. Let’s go clean up Rosalie’s closet together.”

Jacob sighed and gave in. “Fine. You’re right.” He came to his feet and begrudgingly sauntered to the doorway. Of course, he didn’t start cleaning until he got in another word. “Why is everyone so serious in this family? Am I the only one that has the fun personality? Stupid bloodsuckers and their sticks up their asses.” Renesmee shot him a look. He almost forgot how much she hated that word. “Sorry,” he said sheepishly.

“And don’t think you’re the only fun one, Jake,” she said with a reassuring smile. But there was something else in that smile – something mischievous. Jacob raised an eyebrow.

“You should see what my father got her for Valentine’s Day.” Renesmee tried to hold back her enjoyment. “I believe he said it’s in the gas tank of her car.”

Jake grinned. “Well then, I knew I was starting to like that guy for a reason.”

"Edward? Edward! Help!" Emmet raged.

"What Emmet?" Edward howled.

"I've got a big problem" he quoted

"What?" Edward questioned.

"I need fish cakes!"

"NOW!" Emmet shouted.

"Fish cakes, really?" Edward moaned.

"Bella!" Edward commanded.

"Yes Edward" She replied.

"Did you give Emmet a fish cake?" He asked Bella.

"Yeah and?" She argued

"You know if you give Emmet fish cakes he goes mad for them!" Edward screamed.

"Oh yeah" Bella realized.

It was happening. The change. Bella was writhing in pain, screaming in agony, as the fiery tongues of what would be her destruction ran through her. The venom was severing every vein, every artery, shutting down her organs, assuring that her heart would never beat again.

If I could have cried for her I would.

And as I looked at Edward’s face, I knew he would have too. He was clutching her hand, a look of utter turmoil shadowing his perfect face. He was bent and rocking back and forth on his heels, as Carlisle stood like a Guardian Angel behind him with a cold white hand on his shoulder.

Alice and Jasper were speaking in hushed voices over by one of the vast windows in our mansion. I knew she couldn’t see the baby. It terrified her. Jasper was trying to calm her, trying to calm everyone. I could feel that warm radiance emitting from him.

Emmett was beside me of course, chin rested on my shoulder, not breathing. His face was constricted in pain also.

He thought of Bella as a little sister, and at the moment, his little sister was suffering. And he couldn’t help her.

Esme was pacing, cooing at the little bundle of blankets she held in her arms. The baby was crying, it’s tiny little hands balled into tiny little fists. I forgot momentarily of Bella’s current predicament. Walking slowly and quietly to Esme, I tapped her shoulder.

My mother sighed, smiled weakly and handed the little person to me. My heart melted when I saw her.

Bella had been so sure it was a boy. She was positive. But after all that- this tiny girl. I couldn’t believe it when my old shallow ways came creeping up my spine. I was disgusted at the jealousy I felt for this baby- she was so beautiful.

I shook my blonde hair from my eyes and looked into her huge brown ones. Bella. They were wide and staring, and she wasn’t crying anymore.

She had little copper ringlets on her head and a face that looked like it had been painted by Michelangelo. Edward.

I smiled at her, my slightly pointed pearly white teeth flashing at her. The baby smiled at that.

“RENESMEE!” Bella was screaming. Her voice was a screech, and it hurt my overly sensitive ears. Alice cringed and saw the baby in my arms. She narrowed her eyes.

I knew what she was thinking, even if I wasn’t Edward- she thought I was going to do everything in my power to take the baby from Bella and Edward.

I thought about it.

I wasn’t going to.

“It’s alright, Bells, Rosalie has her,” the dog murmured. I hadn’t noticed him. Yuck, I was getting used to the smell. Bella screeched again, and Renesmee made a little whimpering noise in my arms.

“Oh no, hush, baby, it’s Auntie Rose,” I whispered, bending my head so my hair tickled the baby’s little dimpled cheeks.

“I WANT RENESMEE!” Bella hollered. Edward looked sick. He clutched her hand tighter.

“She’s alright, Bella, I promise. I can see her now. Don’t worry, love, the pain will be gone soon, I promise. I promise…” Edward trailed off, and Carlisle bent down too. He went close to Bella as she yelled harder. He didn’t flinch.

“Bella. Renesmee is safe. Don’t worry, nothing will happen to her. We’re all here, and we’re all together. Alice and Jasper. Emmett and Rose. Esme and Jacob are here too, my darling. Edward will not let go of your hand. Listen to me,” Carlisle’s voice was like a hot soothing bath, steeped in consideration and comfort. He brushed Bella’s sweat drenched forehead, and petted her brown curls.

She let out an ear-splitting yelp.

“IT HURTS! PLEASE, EDWARD, KILL ME!” I clutched the baby tighter. Alice was by Edward’s side now, patting his back. Esme, Jasper and Emmett went closer too, and all held hands, it seemed, in silent prayer.

The dog stayed at the head of the sofa, making soft whimpering noises and stroking Bella’s hair. I went closer, but Carlisle shook his head.

Right. I was holding Renesmee. If Bella smelt her, it would drive her crazy. The baby also seemed distraught at her mother’s agony.

I walked slowly up the stairs, cradling her and bouncing her slightly.

I came to myself and Emmett’s room, and took Renesmee out onto out balcony.

Bella’s screams were still clearly audible.

I don’t believe in God. I don’t agree with Carlisle about life after death for vampires, but at the same time, I don’t agree with Edward about us not having souls. We do. I know it.

I wasn’t religious during my life either, but as I stood there on my balcony, gazing out at the forest beyond, holding Renesmee Cullen to my chest I realised that despite what I’d always thought, that she was truly a Miracle sent by He, She or It. I looked up at the heavens.

How ironic. The day that Bella died, left her true life behind, the sun was shining brighter than it ever had in Forks. The beams of light hit me and I felt my skin ripple, as it’s true nature became exposed. The baby made a little noise.

“Hm, do you like it?” I smiled at her. Renesmee smiled, a bright intelligent smile, as if she knew exactly what I had said. She wasn’t made of diamonds like me, but she was shimmering softly, radiating happiness.

She was breathtaking.

And then I prayed.

“Dear God, if you can hear me now… Hi. I guess I’ve never been all that religious before at any stage in my… existence? But I am now. So, how’s it going? Me? Well, my life just got sooo much more complicated. You hear that? That screaming? Yeah, of course you do. Sounds like she’s dying a pretty painful death, doesn’t it? Well, she is. According to all the myths and legends, I’m supposed to be a child of Satan almost, but you can’t pray to him,” I spoke, as the baby clutched my golden locks in her little fists.

“So, I’m asking- no, really God, I’m begging. Look at this little Miracle,” I held Renesmee up in the sunlight. If she could have, she would have blinded me. “That’s her mother down there, changing. Into one of us. A vampire. She’s like a sister to me. She is a sister to me, to all of us. I love her, and I love her husband, that tortured soul down there, staying by her side, going against her wishes for the only time in his life. She wants him to kill her. And he’s too damn caught up in his own mind about You, that he won’t pray.

“So, here I am. Save her. Save him. I don’t care if she’s vampire or if she’s a human or even if she’s one of those dogs. Just make sure, for me, that both of them can watch this beautiful Miracle grow and thrive. Please, don’t hurt my precious family. Or Renesmee’s.”

I finished, and stroked Renesmee’s tiny cherubic face. She giggled and put her little hand forth to touch my chalky white cheekbone. As she did, I saw Bella, the only memory that Renesmee had of her, screaming. Then, I saw Edward, brighter than ever in her head, looking at her with so much wonder in his eyes. I saw my whole family and I saw myself on the balcony, through Renesmee’s eyes. She thought I was the most beautiful thing on the face of the Earth.

She retracted her hand and smiled at me, her eyes repeating what I had just seen. I gasped, breath taken.

She was Gifted too.

I smiled back at her.

“Thank you, darling. But you are the single most beautiful thing I have ever encountered in my almost 80 years. You are so special,” I nuzzled my nose to Renesmee’s and she let out a giggle like the tinkering of silver bells at Christmas.

I turned to go back into my room, and through one last glance up at the sky, as I heard Bella stop screaming, and ask Edward in a pain ridden voice to play Clair de Lune on the piano for her.

I knew he wouldn’t leave her side, so I (being the second best musician in the house) went down stairs to dutifully do as she requested. Smiling at myself, I knew that He, She or It was smiling too.

“The name’s Rosalie Cullen, by the way,” I said. Renesmee nodded her head, and touched my face showing me what she wanted. I smiled.

“Renesmee says thank-you.”
