Jasper heard Alice’s voice floating up from downstairs, distracting him from his book. It sounded like she was in the kitchen. Odd, he thought, why would Alice be in there? He decided to go investigate.
Alice had been entertaining Bella all evening while Edward and the others were out hunting. Alice and Jasper stayed behind with her because they had hunted together the previous night.
“Alice, I can do it, really!” Jasper heard Bella protest. “I’ve cooked a lot more than you have!” she continued.
“I know that,” Alice’s musical voice replied, “but Edward told me to take care of you. Plus, I’ve been watching Food Network a lot lately.” Jasper could imagine the smile on her face.
“What are you two fussing about?” he asked as he entered the kitchen.
“Bella and I were just lounging around, watching TV when her stomach growled. Loudly,” Alice added. “I decided to fix her a grilled cheese sandwich!” She didn’t turn to face her husband but continued buttering the bread instead. Jasper laughed at how watching gourmet cooking on television had inspired her to fix Bella a grilled cheese.
Jasper wrapped his arms around her waist from behind and kissed her cheek. “Why don’t you let Bella do that? The others will be back any minute; you and I can go for a walk.” Alice looked up at him skeptically.
“He’s right, Alice. I am capable of feeding myself. Go on, Edward will be home soon.”
“Hum…,” Alice replied. She left the kitchen and stepped onto the front porch, inhaling deeply. Yes, she could smell them. They were about a mile off and would be back momentarily. She knew Edward would kill her if they left Bella unattended in her fragile human state, though.
Within the next minute, they could hear the rest of their family entering the living room. Jasper darted out to meet them. “Glad you’re home,” he said. “Alice and I are going for a walk. We didn’t want to leave Bella unattended so if you don’t mind…” his voice trailed off and Edward smiled a little at his thoughts.
“See you tomorrow,” Edward called as Jasper pulled Alice past them through the door.
“Are you okay?” Alice questioned as soon as they were out of earshot of the others.
“Fine,” he said grinning. “I just decided that you and I need a change of scenery.” Her expression was still confused. “…from the bedroom?” he hinted.
“Oh!” she grinned up at him. They grabbed hands and began to run. They were heading northeast and Alice knew exactly where he was leading them. The meadow. Edward and Bella had been there before, too, but Jasper and Alice had found the place decades earlier.
“It’s been so long since we came here,” she whispered once they arrived. Jasper sat down in the grass and pulled her into his lap.
“Yes,” he agreed as he kissed her. “Too long,” he added between kisses.
Soon, their clothes were off and their bodies were tangled together in the tall grass. “It’s also been too long since we’ve done this, too,” Jasper said, running his fingers over Alice’s stomach.
“We did this last night,” she replied skeptically.
“Like I said, it’s been far too long.” She laughed musically before her mouth was suddenly very busy.
When they had finished making love, Alice lay curled into Jasper’s chest. Her cheek was placed over his long-silent heart and his arms were wrapped around her. “I love you Jasper Hale,” she said quietly.
“And I love you,” he said, kissing the top of her head.
