Nice, isn’t it?”

She stopped dead on her tracks. Silence befell them.

She turned her head to look at him, gasping internally at the plain sight of his face. It wasn’t just the unusual surprise because of his perfectly pale skin, his crimson lips or his glorious eyes.

It was the simple astonishment of finding him, in the same aisle with her, when all the other students are already out of the building, this lone and ordinary afternoon as the rays of the sunset shot through the enormous glass panes of this school.

She first met him when she entered her first freshman class way back three years ago. At that very first day, she already saw where she stood, and where Edward Cullen did. Noise, speed and glitter, exceptional grades, pretty girls. All that was in store for him was glory and success.

She wasn’t one to submit to his perfect appearance, though. But she sure was human enough to consider harboring a speck of envy for all that the damn guy has.

He had all kinds of relationships. Teacher to student, a piece of cake, of course. Parent to child, blissful, without doubt. Friend to friend, peer to peer…those didn’t seem to make any difference for the generation’s bearings.

Theirs was a different one.

What the hell are you talking about, Cullen?”

Indifferent at one turn, warm the next. Deadpan at one round, odious for the next.

The complicated arrangement of their relationship cannot be defined as well as she could predict when a storm would come, or what score she’d get on Geometry. It was simply just like the ragged, spontaneous and uncontrollable surge of the ocean. He’d thrash her year-long project, then lend her a pen. He’d share his umbrella with her, then he’d humiliate her in front of his cult. Bella wasn’t one to engage herself of these ridiculous (and highly degrading) scenarios but she found herself, for once, going with one stupid flow she cannot describe or remove from her system.

Those didn’t exactly fit her description of friendship, but goddamn it, that was the farthest they could get into without everything turning into a major disaster.

He rounded up, walking with confident, definite steps towards her.

And he smirked the smirk she hated.

Of course you do know.”

She couldn’t exactly tell when it even started. All she knew was she completely ostracized him for one day, and found herself asking where he was the next, if he was sick, if he’s done with his homework…why he’s kissing the damned school muse.

She could’ve already been too late when she finally let herself acknowledge the facts.

Not that Bella Swan can swallow her pride far enough to admit her susceptibility.

I don’t think I do, but if you tell me, maybe I will.”

She swallowed, her jaw locking tight.

Because she wasn’t giving up this time.

She tried to stop it. Before.

He closed the remaining few inches between them.

You can’t.”

But she knew as well as he did that he can.

The smirk widened.

This.”

And his breath swooped on her face, automatically closing her eyes.

And she knew how much he knew.

She could see it unmistakably at his clear, emerald eyes--that every emotion she’d never have disclosed for the span of her being was exposed in the greatest magnification right under his gaze.

I knew it.”

A hard, cold, derisive chuckle.

The warmth dissipated into a hundred emotions, scorching what was left of the useless hope underneath, then bursted into nothingness.

Bella, you just can’t help falling in love with me. And I just can’t do anything if I love to break you.”

Sometimes, it’s just hard to be an open book.
